Find Sedgwick Civil Dockets

For a Sedgwick County civil docket, start with Kansas CaseSearch, the state's free case lookup tool. It shows basic case information for noncriminal matters filed in the district court. From there, you can dig deeper through the court's Flexible Calendar, hearing-results reports, a public terminal at the courthouse, or the clerk of the district court itself. The Civil Department handles Chapter 60 actions, Chapter 61 limited matters, small claims, and transcripts, while family and probate cases sit with separate departments and their own access rules. Remember that a docket entry only notes activity in a case. To read the petition, order, or judgment behind it, request the document through the proper records channel.

Sedgwick CV, LM, and DM Routes

The code after the filing year identifies a stream, not a judge. CV marks regular Chapter 60 civil work. LM marks Chapter 61 limited actions. DM marks domestic and family matters, which route through the Family Law Department and are excluded from DC18's public internet portal. PR matters route to Probate at 1900 E Morris.

CV
Regular civil actions such as contract, tort, and real-property disputes.
LM
Limited civil actions handled on a distinct track.
DM
Domestic and family cases with separate clerk and online-access rules.
Journal entry
The filed court entry that records a ruling or judgment.

Civil Dockets: What They Show

A Sedgwick County civil docket identifies the case and dates its activity. The register may show parties and roles, counsel, judge, status, filings, motions, settings, and results. The calendar is narrower: it reports where and when a hearing is set. Neither source automatically supplies every filed paper.

Case numberSG-YYYY-CV-NNNNNN or the LM form for limited actions.
Case identityCase type, caption, party roles, filing date, status, and assigned judge.

SettingsDate, time, courtroom, hearing type, comment, attorneys, and CSO when shown.
OutcomeJudgment, journal entry, dismissal, satisfaction, or appeal activity, subject to access rules.

Sedgwick Civil Calendar Versus Results

The Civil Flexible Calendar answers what is scheduled. It lists Date/Time, Case Number, Case Style, Hearing Type, Hearing Comment, Attorneys, and CSO beneath the judge, division, and courtroom header. The separate Civil Hearing Results report answers whether a past setting was recorded as held or as a failure to appear.

A result digest is not a signed order. A motion-for-default setting is not a default judgment, and a hearing-held value does not reveal the ruling. Request the filed journal entry or judgment when the result itself matters.

What Cases Fill the Civil Docket

The Civil Department maintains Chapter 60 actions, Chapter 61 limited actions, small claims, and transcripts. Regular cases include contracts, torts, real property, foreclosures, money recovery, damages, and name changes. The division line matters because related proceedings can follow different clerks and access rules.

  • CV regular actions include contract, tort, and real-property disputes.
  • LM limited actions include money claims and other Chapter 61 matters.
  • Small claims use a simplified route with a $10,000 claim limit and no jury.
  • Family and domestic matters belong to the Family Law Department.
  • Probate, guardianship, and care-and-treatment matters use the Probate Department.

Small Claims filing is handled on the eleventh floor while hearings occur on the fifth floor. DC18 says attorney representation is generally unavailable in small claims unless the opposing party is or was a licensed attorney.

Sedgwick Civil Filings by the Numbers

The FY 2024 Kansas civil report counted 31,566 total civil filings in District 18 for the period ending June 30, 2024. That total included 2,591 regular actions, 20,085 limited actions, and 8,890 domestic-relations filings.

The volume explains why CV, LM, and DM are useful routing distinctions. It does not mean all 31,566 files are visible online. DC18 excludes all DM cases and several protected categories from its public portal.

Hearings on the Civil Docket

Common Sedgwick County civil docket labels include pretrial conference, status conference, motion, motion for default judgment, and answer hearing. A comment may state remote video or name the motion. Read the date, time, division, courtroom, and comment together, then confirm a critical appearance with the clerk or filed notice.

Resets and continuances can move an event after a PDF was generated. The court warns that calendar information can change without notice. The broader Sedgwick County court schedule explains the calendar, CaseSearch, clerk-phone, counter, and records-request routes together.

Sedgwick Civil Judgment Requests

A docket entry can point to a petition, answer, motion, order, judgment, garnishment, satisfaction, transcript, or appeal notice without displaying the paper. For a copy, give the Records Department the case number, caption if known, exact document name or date, delivery choice, copy count, and whether certification is needed. DC18 requires one written request per case number.

Submit by email to sg.micro@kscourts.gov, fax to 316-941-5358, mail, or in person at the sixth-floor Records Department, 525 N Main, Wichita, KS 67203. A public terminal can show public documents absent from the web, including some older converted material. Call 316-660-5900 for routing. The clerk provides an estimate and requires prepayment before filling the request.

Who Can See Civil Dockets

Many regular civil records are public, but Kansas law and Supreme Court rules restrict specific case types, documents, and personal information. DC18 excludes all DM cases, protection matters, adoptions, care-and-treatment, guardianship, juvenile matters, and sealed or confidential images from internet access. A public courthouse terminal may show more lawful information than the web, but it does not open a sealed file.

Access rule: K.S.A. 45-218 requires action on a request by the end of the third business day. K.S.A. 45-221 recognizes exceptions and separation of open from closed material.

The district court Records Department, not Sedgwick County government's Freedom of Information Officer, handles state-court case files. Family, probate, municipal, and federal matters may require a different clerk. A blank portal result should trigger a court-and-case-type check, not a conclusion that no record exists.

Sedgwick Civil Filing and Search Layers

DC18 requires authorized filers to use Kansas eFlex for Civil and other major divisions. eFlex is a login-based filing system, not a public register viewer. The public uses CaseSearch, the calendars, the public terminal, and the clerk. Keeping those layers separate prevents a common mistake: sending a reader to a filing login to look for public case activity.

The Civil Department is on the eleventh floor and lists clerk hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. It maintains the case, while the sixth-floor Records Department provides broader copy, archived retrieval, certification, email, mail, fax, and research service. That division of work is why a person may start at the Civil counter but finish a document request with Records.

Sedgwick Civil Clerk and Division Routing

The Civil Department works from the eleventh floor at 525 N Main, while the Records Department's public terminal and copy service are on the sixth floor. Small Claims filings use the civil office, but hearings are held on the fifth floor. Family Law handles divorce, parentage, support, custody, and protection work. Probate and guardianship matters route to 1900 E Morris. These locations explain why a broad request sent to one counter may need to be routed before the correct file can be checked.

The 2026 assignment sheet identifies Deborah Hernandez Mitchell as Presiding Civil Judge. A division assignment helps orient a calendar row, but the division number is not part of the CV or LM case-type code and does not replace a case-number search. Current assignment details should be checked against the official judge-information page because judicial routing can change while the underlying case number remains stable.

DC18 states that eFlex filing is mandatory for Civil, Family Law, Traffic, Criminal, and Juvenile matters. That requirement explains how new papers enter the electronic court workflow, but eFlex is reserved for authorized filers and requires a login. The public should not use it as a substitute for CaseSearch. For a document entered through eFlex but absent from the guest view, the courthouse terminal and written Records request remain the supported public routes, subject to access and redaction rules.
